About these standings
This site turns IPDA's season-long results workbook into public standings, with a page for every debater, team, school and tournament. The workbook is the only source; the site never changes it. Seasons shown: 2025–26, 2024–25.
Points
Individual debate (Novice, JV, Varsity, Pro): 1 point per prelim win, 1 point for breaking, and 2 points per elim win.
TIPDA team debate: 2 points per prelim win, 2 for breaking, and 4 per elim win.
Partial elim rounds earn nothing: the break point goes to everyone who reaches the first full elim round, whether by seed or by winning the partial round.
Speaker awards earn 5 points for 1st speaker down to 1 point for 5th. They're shown on profiles and tournament pages but don't change the debate rank.
National rank
Each debater is ranked by the sum of their 6 best tournament scores (all of them if they attended 6 or fewer). On profiles, filled dots mark the 6 scores that count, so it's clear why a seventh tournament didn't move the rank.
Ties are broken in this order: head-to-head, a manual calculation, then the best 4, best 7 and best 8 scores. The first two are decided by hand; until they are, tied debaters share a rank, shown as “T-3”.
Debaters in more than one division appear in each division's standings with only that division's points and rank. Their profile shows each division separately, plus a combined season total.
Finishes
The workbook records only each debater's total points at each tournament, not elim results. Because brackets have a fixed shape (a break to 16 always ends with 8 octofinalists, 4 quarterfinalists, 2 semifinalists, a finalist and a champion), many finishes can be worked out from the totals.
A finish is shown as certain only when every bracket that fits the points agrees on it. When they disagree, the page lists each possibility, like “Quarterfinalist or Octofinalist”, until the elim results are entered. Tournaments with no elims, closeouts or byes in elims show points only until then. Prelim records come from the finish: prelim wins = points − 1 − 2 × elim wins for a debater who broke.
Someone who lost in a partial elim round earns the same points as someone who didn't break, so they show as “Didn't break” unless that round is recorded.
School awards
A school's division squad score at a tournament is the sum of its top 3 debaters' points in that division (top 2 teams for TIPDA). School pages also show the Scholastic, Founders and community college standings as they appear in the workbook, ranked by their best 6 tournaments.
Corrections and removal
The site shows only names (school and surname, as in the workbook), schools and results. If something is wrong, or you'd like your name removed, contact the IPDA results coordinator. Corrections are made in the workbook and go live with the next update. A removed debater's page is taken down and their name shows as “Withdrawn debater” in standings, so everyone else's ranks stay correct.
